Recently, I had the great pleasure of being featured on a faaantastic podcast called The After Life, with Colleen Kavanaugh. We talked about Playscriptions... and how one can tap into their personal sense of peace and play for a light-hearted "stitching" that holds their day together. Days become weeks, months, years-- before you know it, life is pretty great and you didn't have to overthink it!
The little good wolf wakes in the morning and gets out of bed....
after a big, stretchy yawn, she puts flowers on her head.
The flowers rest upon her head, as she lights up any room....
with her stunning eyes, sweet-little-smile, and marvelous perfume!
This poem is was inspired by Haley Sky Allen (my 9-year-old niece) who darted to my dress-up stash with the gusto of a squirrel in summer!
I must fess-up...
When it comes to dress-up, I just can't get enough! I've played dress-up with EVERY AGE, 0-100 + and it never fails to create at least one sacredly silly moment.
Yeah, yeah, yeah... One of you is thinking that dress-up is a germ-infested nightmare.
I feel you. You don't have to put anything on ... but you can engage in looking, joking, and provoking during a solid, group dress-up. Maybe you're the photographer; or maybe you write a poem about it later, like I did!
Come what may, there's always a way, to play today.
Happy 2018-- now the 2000's can gamble, buy cigs, and make "adult" decisions!
Have you ever painted a picture?
I dare you to try! People seem to think it's harmful, like driving a car without a license--or gambling before you're 18! wink
The world won't crumble if you paint a crappy picture-- and you just may love the process.
First, acquire paint and something to paint on. Then, lock yourself somewhere secure
--or heck, make it a group-hang with your best pals who don't judge.
Make it classy, sassy, globby, snobby, bright, dark, big, small, frazzled, bedazzled, real, or imaginative... just get it from your head--into the world!
"If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.”
―Vincent van Gogh
When's the last time you found yourself "winging it"? (chicken noise)
Making up a recipe, telling a story, concocting a table shim out of napkins, or going with an idea to see what happens-- this is all improv! An improvisational approach to life gives us more avenues to peace and Playville.
Although, being improvisational is not a commonly-promoted approach to current times. Society at large tends to value thinking ahead, making plans, educating, etc. etc. etc. While these are important things to put into play at least half the time--there's a huge need for, well, not doing these things. Relinquishing agendas, choosing to feel as opposed to think, and really existing in the moment--for the moment.... are not only components of improv, but also traits of good leaders and groovy people.
One profound thing I've learned about the act of improvising... (producing/making from whatever is available) is that it has to be nurtured and practiced. As we find ourselves grasping for what we think is unreachable, or trying to think our way through everything... we recognize that improv will save the day!
Practice improv in your life by playing improv games!
Improv mantras for the week ....
"go with it"
"make your partner look good"
"relax, nothing is under control"
"let's be weird together"
"sounds are the coolest, kerplunk! splat! sciddley doooooo!"
When is the last time you played the game "I Spy"?!
"I Spy" is so great because it can be played anywhere with anyone, at any time--and there are no materials needed. It's a practice in being in the present moment, truly listening, and inquiring.
Ever done a Magic Eye?!
I used to get lost in those images for hours. Visual games are a beautiful way to play! I encourage you to make time for them. Check out the super cool exercise below... try to meditate on 3 dots at once.
"Press Play" was a recent TED Radio hour....
In the episode, TED speakers describe how all forms of amusement — from tossing a ball to video games — can make us smarter, saner and more collaborative.
WaHoO~ so true! As we "adult", it's imperative to weave play into our day... little playful pick-me-ups to get from A to B to C can go a long way.
Advance of the Science of Play
"A huge amount of existing scientific research — from neurophysiology, developmental and cognitive psychology, to animal play behavior, and evolutionary and molecular biology – contains rich data on play. The existing research describes patterns and states of play and explains how play shapes our brains, creates our competencies, and ballasts our emotions."
